Our Story

We started with a dumpling.

How Auckland’s OG bottomless dumplings began.

Friends clinking drinks over xiao long bao and chilli wings at Mr Hao

Auckland’s OG.

Mr Hao opened on Dominion Road, built on the late-night eating culture of Shanghai — skewers, cold beer, and a room that got louder as the night went on.

Then we did something nobody in Auckland had done: we made dumplings bottomless. One price, hand-folded dumplings, and as many rounds as you could manage. It caught on. Plenty have copied it since — we were first, and we still think we do it best.

These days the kitchen folds dumplings every morning, the wings have picked up a couple of awards, and the cocktails are still $8.88. The room’s still loud. That part was never going to change.

The room does half the work.
